Albie’s Lambretta

ALBIE WAS VERY PROUD of his Earls Court Special, which was finished in sunflower yellow and powder blue. At the time, he imagined it to be just as it came off the assembly line at the Lambretta factory in Milan, but, as he was to discover later it was actually built, under licence, by Serveta in Spain.

Regarding the colour scheme, which doesn’t appear in any of the official ex-factory colours, it seems that, went it was first imported into this country by the concessionaires they sent several machines to a local paint-shop, which were customised especially for the Earls Court Motorcyle Show. Albie’s scooter was the result!

The Lambretta Slimstyle Series III had a classic ’sixties design and boasted higher speeds yet improved fuel economy than the previous series.

It displayed a complete change in the style of the bodywork, although the front suspension remained untouched. The rear suspension used the same spring and shock absorber, but was shorter. In the engine compartment things were mainly the same as the Series II, although a new carburettor, with a needleless float-chamber, gave increased mpg.

The early Slimstyles had four-pole electrics, but later on they were given six-pole. The gear-change and switch block were painted the same colour as the scooter, which were normally all one colour (except in Albie’s case!).
