Life at Jarrolds

THROW OUT TWO HANDS: 1963

ANOTHER good year for Jarrolds as, once again, a satisfying number of our products are to be found on the shelves of the International Exhibition of Book Design.

Among the 138 British books selected were the following, all produced by Jarrolds:

Allen & Unwin The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
Brockhampton Press Police and Detection, In Search of Charm
Jarrold & Sons Colour Photography
John Murray Introduction to Biology
Nelson Atlas of the British Flora
Oldbourne Press Our Living Bible
Penguin Books Fashion, The New Architecture of Europe
Thames & Hudson The Loom of Art, A Time of Gods, Bronzes

Perhaps one of our more interesting, indeed exotic, production was Throw Out Two Hands written by Mr Anthony Smith and published by Allen & Unwin.

Readers will probably remember seeing a film on their television screens, not so long ago, depicting the adventures of Mr Smith and his equally intrepid colleagues in their flight inland from Dar-es-Salaam.

Apart from the sheer technical achievement of being able to keep aloft and in motion, itself fascinating to watch, there was all the wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater with its herds of animals and various species of predatory birds and beasts.

Mr Anthony Smith was kind enough to visit the Works while his book was in production and he is shown in the above photograph together with Mr John Redgrave, one of our senior representatives, admiring the basket in which Mr Smith made his hazardous journey. Come to think of it this might be a way of breaking the traffic jams. One would hope the management would allow hitching one’s basket to the flagpole!
